“How I Became an Empowered Woman: Looking at 40 Years in the Legal Profession”

Judge Privett attended Vanderbilt as an undergraduate and was known for her activism there, particularly with regard to gender equality. From there, she went to NYU Law School where she was first introduced to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and continued her work for civil rights. After law school, she worked in her hometown of Birmingham, and in 1995, she was appointed the first female US Attorney in Alabama, during which time she reopened the investigation into the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. In 2003, she was appointed Circuit Judge for the Tenth Judicial Circuit of Alabama.
