Dr. Amy Patterson publishes new book

In the book Dependent Agency in the Global Health Arena, Dr. Amy Patterson and her co-author Dr. Emma-Louise Anderson (University of Leeds, UK) examine how local people in Malawi and Zambia react to the massive infusion of donor funds to fight AIDS in the mid-2000s and the subsequent retraction of that funding after 2011.  The book questions how donor programs create opportunities for local individuals to act as agents, not beholden to donors but able to work within their own contexts of poverty and aid dependence to gain benefits, opportunities, and status. Using fieldwork conducted between 2007 and 2014 among people living with HIV and AIDS, donor representatives, and government officials, Patterson and Anderson highlight the performances of compliance and strategies of resistance that local people use in the broader arena of AIDS programs.
