Professor Amy Patterson Receives Grant

Amy Patterson, Professor of Politics at The University of the South, Sewanee, TN, has received a grant from the Global Religion Research Initiative at Notre Dame University (funded by Templeton Foundation) to study how churches shape citizenship norms and behavior among youth in Africa. The project is particularly significant because of Africa's sizable youth population, as well as the central role of religion in politics. The two-year grant involves collaboration with two political scientists at Whitworth University and Calvin College, as well as three African social scientists from the University of Ghana-Legon, Makerere University (Uganda), and the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). Interviews and focus groups will be conducted among church officials, youth leaders, and youth activists in urban Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda. The anticipated outcomes include conference presentations and academic articles.
